Recommended Reading – "The Psychology of Money" by Morgan Housel

I recommend this book to readers who want to build a healthier relationship with money. I deeply resonate with Housel’s perspective on accumulating wealth and achieving financial freedom.

Wealth is invisible. I especially appreciate how the author clearly distinguishes between being “rich” and being “wealthy.” “Rich” is what people see – luxurious homes, expensive cars, and premium brands. “Wealthy,” on the other hand, is what people don’t see – living modestly while steadily building savings and investments. Housel highlights an interesting idea: “Spending money to show others how much money you have is the fastest way to have less money.”
Financial freedom over consumption. Saving money is not about buying something later; it is about achieving financial freedom. Once we have accumulated enough wealth, we gain flexibility, the ability to choose work we enjoy, leave a job that no longer serves us, pursue passions, or prioritise what matters most, such as time with loved ones or taking a break to recharge.
What financial freedom means:
1. Quitting a job without fear of financial burden.
2. Taking time off for personal care or family needs without stress.
3. Waiting for the right opportunity instead of jumping at the first paying offer.
4. Absorbing unexpected expenses without derailing your life.
This can be achieved by leading a modest lifestyle with conscious control of your spending.
Time as the greatest dividend. According to Housel, the highest form of wealth is having control over your time. Happiness is less about possessions and more about autonomy - being able to do what you want, when you want, with whom you want, for as long as you want. That freedom is the most valuable form of wealth.
Generating passive income. For me, delaying gratification, saving consistently, and investing in assets that generate income is important. Even once a certain wealth level is reached, we still need to control our spending to preserve wealth and enjoy financial stability.
